Lower Omo Valley Tour with a Local Guide from Jinka

The Lower Omo Valley in southern Ethiopia is home to the Hamer, Mursi, Karo, Dassanech and several other peoples, each with its own customs, dress and markets.

Our tours start from Jinka, so you plan directly with a local guide instead of going through a reseller. Itineraries are built around market days and the ceremonies taking place during your dates.

What you will see on a Lower Omo Valley tour

Most visitors combine villages, weekly markets and the landscapes of Mago National Park and the Omo River.

  • ✓Mursi villages near Mago National Park
  • ✓Hamer villages around Turmi and Dimeka, and the Hamer bull jumping ceremony when one is taking place
  • ✓Karo villages above the Omo River at Korcho
  • ✓Weekly markets such as Key Afer, Turmi and Dimeka (market days change, we plan around them)
  • ✓Konso cultural landscape on the road in from Arba Minch

How long should a Lower Omo Valley tour be?

Three days is the minimum to meet the Mursi and Hamer from Jinka. Five days adds markets and a relaxed pace. Seven days lets you include Konso, the Karo and a Dassanech visit without rushing. Distances are long and roads are slow, so we recommend more days rather than fewer.

Why book direct with a local guide

You speak to the people who will actually be with you on the road, there is no agency in the middle, and we can adjust the route to ceremonies and market days as plans change.
