The Bale Mountains have the highest population density of Ethiopian wolves in the world, with about 250 individuals in the park. Sightings are very common on the Sanetti Plateau, especially in early morning and late afternoon when they are most active. Our guides know preferred wolf territories and hunting grounds. While we cannot guarantee sightings, the probability is very high - most visitors see wolves, often at close range as they are not particularly afraid of vehicles.
The Bale Mountains have highly variable weather due to altitude variations. The Sanetti Plateau (above 3,000m) can be cold, especially at night, with temperatures sometimes dropping below freezing. Daytime temperatures are cool. The Harenna Forest is warmer but can be wet and misty. Layered clothing is essential - bring warm layers, waterproof jacket, hat, and gloves for the plateau, and lighter layers for lower elevations. Weather can change rapidly in the mountains.
Most walks are moderate, with some options for more challenging hikes. The altitude on the Sanetti Plateau (above 3,000m) means some visitors may experience shortness of breath. Walks in the Harenna Forest involve uneven terrain but are generally not steep. We adjust walks based on group fitness levels. Good walking shoes are essential. Those with mobility issues should discuss with us in advance as some areas have limited accessibility.
