Day-by-day itinerary

  1. 1

    Day 1: Day 1.

Arba Minch – Dorze – Arba Minch Meet your guide and driver in Arba Minch and begin the journey into the Dorze highlands. As the road climbs into the mountains, the landscape changes dramatically, with views across the surrounding highlands and valleys. The Dorze are particularly known for their traditional weaving, which has long been an important part of community life. Traditionally, men undertake much of the weaving while women are involved in spinning cotton. During the visit, learn about the traditional techniques, materials and patterns used by Dorze weavers and the importance of weaving within the community. You will also see the distinctive tall traditional houses constructed using bamboo and other locally available materials. Another important part of Dorze life is enset, or false banana. Learn how this crop is cultivated and processed and how it contributes to the traditional food system of the community. Where appropriate, you can learn about traditional food preparation and, when food is offered and you would like to try it, taste local dishes. The visit is designed as a genuine cultural encounter. When welcomed by a local family, you can enter a traditional home, meet family members, learn about their everyday lives and participate in a traditional coffee ceremony. After spending time in the Dorze area, return to Arba Minch. Overnight: Haile Resort, Arba Minch (lake view room)

  2. 2

    Day 2: Day 2.

Arba Minch – Lake Chamo – Konso After breakfast, visit Lake Chamo before continuing south toward Konso. Take a boat excursion on the lake and look for the large Nile crocodiles, hippos and numerous water birds found around its shores. One of the best-known areas of the lake is commonly called the Crocodile Market, a name referring to the concentration of crocodiles along parts of the shoreline rather than a marketplace where crocodiles are traded. After the Lake Chamo excursion, continue toward Konso. Konso Cultural Landscape Arrive in the Konso area and begin exploring the remarkable cultural landscape. Konso is renowned for its extensive stone terraces, traditional fortified settlements and distinctive social organization. Explore a traditional Konso village and learn how the terraces have been developed and maintained over generations to conserve soil and water and support agriculture. Your guide will explain the traditional organization of the settlement and the cultural meaning of important structures and communal spaces. You will also learn about Waka memorials and the traditional funerary customs associated with them. Where local arrangements permit, the program includes a visit to the King of the Kartita clan of Konso. You will also have the opportunity to learn about traditional Konso funerary practices, including the historical mummification of important ritual leaders and its cultural significance. If the visit coincides with a Konso market day — Monday, Thursday or Saturday — the itinerary can be adjusted to include the market. Continue to your accommodation in the Konso area. Overnight: Kanta Lodge, Konso

  3. 3

    Day 3: Day 3.

Konso – Arbore – Turmi After breakfast, leave Konso and travel south toward the Lower Omo Valley. The landscape changes gradually as the route descends from the Konso highlands toward the hotter and drier lowlands. Along the way, visit the Arbore community. The Arbore have distinctive traditions, clothing, ornaments and social practices that reflect their adaptation to the environment of the southern Omo region. Spend time meeting community members and learning about their daily lives and cultural traditions. When welcomed, you may enter a traditional home, meet a family and share a coffee ceremony. If a local market or cultural event coincides with your visit, the itinerary may be adjusted to include it where timing permits. Continue toward Turmi. After arrival, settle into your lodge and relax. Depending on the timing of the journey and local circumstances, there may be an opportunity for an additional cultural experience in or around Turmi. Overnight: Buska Lodge, Turmi

  4. 4

    Day 4: Day 4.

Turmi – Karo / Korcho – Turmi After breakfast, drive west toward the Omo River and Korcho Village, where you will meet the Karo people. The Karo are one of the smaller communities of the Lower Omo Valley and are particularly known for their distinctive face and body painting. Spend time in the village learning about Karo traditions, social life and the relationship between the community and the Omo River landscape. Where available and welcomed, a traditional Karo coffee ceremony can form part of the visit. The experience is intended to allow genuine interaction with community members. When welcomed, you may enter traditional homes, meet families and learn about everyday life. After the Karo visit, return toward Turmi. Depending on the day and local circumstances, the afternoon can provide an opportunity for a Hamar village visit or local market. Overnight: Buska Lodge, Turmi

  5. 5

    Day 5: Day 5.

Turmi – Omorate – Dassanech – Turmi After breakfast, travel south toward Omorate and the lower Omo River. The landscape becomes increasingly dry as you approach the southern end of the Omo Valley. At Omorate, cross the Omo River by traditional dugout canoe, where local conditions permit, and continue to the Dassanech area. Dassanech Community Experience Meet the Dassanech community and learn about their traditional way of life, social organization, clothing, ornaments and adaptation to the dry environment around the lower Omo River. Spend time with community members and learn about their everyday activities. When welcomed, you may enter a traditional home, meet a family and participate in a coffee ceremony. There may also be an opportunity to taste local food when it is offered and you would like to try it. After the community visit, cross back over the Omo River and return to Turmi. The additional time provided by this six-day itinerary allows the day to be conducted at a more comfortable pace, with flexibility for appropriate cultural stops depending on local circumstances.
