Begin your exploration with a visit to an Aari community. The Aari are one of the important cultural groups of the southern Omo region. During the visit, you can learn about traditional homes, agriculture, family life and everyday community activities. Where welcomed, you may enter a traditional home, meet local families and photograph aspects of everyday life respectfully. Continue to the Jinka Ethnographic Museum, where you can learn more about the cultural groups and traditional ways of life found throughout the Lower Omo Valley. The museum provides useful cultural context for the communities you will encounter during the following days. After the museum visit, continue to your lodge. Overnight: Eco-Omo Lodge, Jinka

  2. 2

    Day 2: Day 2.

Excursion to Tama Wildlife Reserve – Bodi Community – Jinka After breakfast, travel toward Tama Wildlife Reserve for a wildlife and landscape photography experience. Depending on seasonal conditions and wildlife activity, there may be opportunities to photograph: Zebra Kudu Hartebeest Gazelle Other wildlife present in the area Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed because the animals move freely through their natural environment. Continue with a visit to the Bodi community. Learn about Bodi culture, traditional livelihoods, livestock, agriculture and everyday life. Where welcomed, you may meet local families, enter traditional homes and photograph community life respectfully. Later, return to Jinka. Overnight: Eco-Omo Lodge, Jinka

  3. 3

    Day 3: Day 3.

Jinka – Mursi Community – Banna Community – Turmi After breakfast, leave Jinka and travel toward Turmi through the Lower Omo Valley. Visit a Mursi community and learn about the people's distinctive traditions, clothing, body adornment and way of life. The visit is intended to provide a genuine cultural encounter rather than simply a brief photographic stop. Where welcomed, you may enter a traditional home, meet local people and learn about everyday life. Continue toward the Banna community. The Banna are traditionally involved in pastoralism and agriculture and are known for distinctive clothing, hairstyles, ornaments and cultural traditions. Where welcomed, spend time with local families and learn about their daily activities. If your journey coincides with the appropriate market day, your guide can look for an opportunity to visit a Banna market. Banna markets may take place on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday. If your journey takes place on Saturday, there may also be an opportunity to visit a Hamar-side market, depending on the route, timing and local activity. Market visits are opportunities rather than guaranteed activities because they depend on the local calendar and actual activity on the day. Continue to Turmi. Overnight: Buska Lodge, Turmi

  4. 4

    Day 4: Day 4.

Turmi – Omorate – Dassanech – Hamar Village – Turmi After breakfast, travel south from Turmi toward Omorate, the last Ethiopian town before the Kenya border. At Omorate, cross the Omo River by traditional dugout canoe, where local conditions permit, and continue to a Dassanech community. Meet the Dassanech people and learn about their traditional way of life in the dry environment surrounding the lower Omo River. Learn about their homes, clothing, ornaments, livestock, family life and everyday activities. Where welcomed, you may enter a traditional home and interact with local families. Omorate is located close to the Ethiopia–Kenya border and has an immigration checkpoint where travelers may be required to present their passport and visa. Travelers must carry their original passport with them when visiting Omorate. Please make sure your passport is with you before leaving Turmi for Omorate. Return toward Turmi and visit a Hamar village. Spend time learning about Hamar culture, traditional homes, clothing, village life and everyday activities. Depending on the local calendar, there may also be an opportunity to visit a local market or traditional ceremony in the afternoon. If a Hamar Bull Jumping Ceremony is taking place during your visit, your guide will make every effort to incorporate it into the itinerary where timing and local circumstances permit. Ceremonies and markets cannot be guaranteed because they depend on local community schedules. Overnight: Buska Lodge, Turmi

  5. 5

    Day 5: Day 5.

Turmi – Nyangatom – Karo / Korcho – Turmi Today takes you farther west into some of the more remote areas of the Lower Omo Valley. Travel toward the Nyangatom area and meet community members. Learn about their traditional pastoral and agricultural lifestyle and their relationship with the environment around the Omo River. Because Nyangatom settlements are dispersed, community members may be away with livestock or working elsewhere. The exact nature of the cultural encounter therefore depends on who is present. Continue toward Korcho Village, where you will meet the Karo people. The Karo are particularly renowned for their distinctive face and body painting, making this one of the most visually striking photographic experiences of the Lower Omo Valley. Spend time with community members and photograph traditional life and the spectacular landscape overlooking the Omo River. Where available and welcomed, you may participate in a traditional Karo coffee ceremony. Depending on the day and route, there may be an opportunity to encounter a local market. Local markets on this part of the route may be encountered on Monday, Thursday or Saturday. Market visits depend on timing and actual market activity and cannot be guaranteed. Return to Turmi. Overnight: Buska Lodge, Turmi

  6. 6

    Day 6: Day 6.

Turmi – Arbore – Konso After breakfast, leave Turmi and travel east toward Konso. Along the route, visit the Arbore community. The Arbore are known for their distinctive clothing, jewellery, hairstyles and cultural traditions. Spend time meeting community members and learning about their daily lives. Where welcomed, you may enter a traditional home, meet a family and experience a more personal cultural encounter. Where the local calendar and timing permit, your guide may also look for an opportunity to include a local market. Continue toward Konso. As you leave the hot, dry Lower Omo Valley, the landscape gradually changes as the road climbs toward the higher Konso region. Up on arrival, you will visit the Konso traditional village then meet the King of one of the 9 clan of Konso. Overnight: Kanta Lodge, Konso

  7. 7

    Day 7: Day 7.

Konso – Arba Minch – Lake Chamo and Arba Minch Nature After breakfast, leave Konso and travel toward Arba Minch. The journey provides a striking transition from the terraced Konso highlands toward the greener landscapes of the Rift Valley around Arba Minch. Upon arrival in Arba Minch, enjoy a boat excursion on Lake Chamo. Lake Chamo is known for its large Nile crocodiles, hippos and waterbirds. The boat excursion provides excellent opportunities for wildlife and landscape photography, with views across the lake and surrounding Rift Valley scenery. Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed, but Lake Chamo is well known for its crocodile and hippo populations. After the boat excursion, continue exploring the natural attractions and scenic surroundings of Arba Minch. The lakes, vegetation, hills and panoramic landscapes provide additional opportunities for nature and landscape photography. Later, check in and relax at your hotel. Overnight: Haile Resort, Arba Minch

  8. 8

    Day 8: Day 8.

Arba Minch – Dorze – Yirga Alem After breakfast, continue into the highlands toward the Dorze community in the Guge Mountains. The Dorze are particularly famous for their traditional weaving, distinctive bamboo houses and highland agricultural traditions. Their tall traditional houses, constructed from bamboo and other locally available materials, are among the most recognizable architectural features of the region. These houses provide excellent subjects for architectural and cultural photography. Traditional weaving has long been an important part of Dorze culture. Traditionally, men undertake much of the weaving while women are involved in spinning cotton. Spend time observing traditional weaving techniques, materials and patterns and photograph the process where appropriate. Learn about enset, commonly known as false banana, which plays an important role in the local agricultural and food system. Where appropriate, learn about the preparation of Kocho, a traditional food made from enset. When food is offered and you would like to try it, you can experience traditional Dorze food.
