I am proud to share a milestone from my professional journey: my local tour guiding training certificate, issued by the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Regional State Culture and Tourism Bureau in collaboration with the Harnessing Diversity for Sustainable Development and Social Change Project.

Nearly 15 Years of Professional Tour Guiding: My Journey from Jinka to the Omo Valley By Solomon Kidane, Founder of Omo Valley Tour Ethiopia I am proud to share a milestone from my professional journey: my local tour guiding training certificate, issued by the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Regional State Culture and Tourism Bureau in collaboration with the Harnessing Diversity for Sustainable Development and Social Change Project. I completed the practical and theoretical training in Jinka from 2 October to 12 October 2011. This was an important step in developing my professional knowledge and skills as a local tour guide. Nearly 15 years later, that certificate remains a meaningful reminder of where my journey began and how much experience I have gained along the way. From Local Roots to Professional Guiding I was born and raised in Jinka, a town that serves as an important gateway to the extraordinary cultural diversity of the Lower Omo Valley. Growing up in this region gave me a close connection to its landscapes, communities, traditions, and way of life. Over the years, guiding has become much more than showing visitors places on a map. It is about helping travelers understand the people and cultures they encounter, explaining local traditions with care, and creating opportunities for genuine cultural exchange. My professional training gave me a foundation, while years of working with travelers from different countries have continued to deepen my knowledge and understanding of the region. Discover the Omo Valley with a Local Guide Through Omo Valley Tour Ethiopia, I organize private and customized cultural tours for travelers who want to explore southern Ethiopia with a knowledgeable local guide. Depending on your interests and itinerary, your journey may include visits to Mursi communities, Hamar villages and markets, Karo communities around Korcho, Dassanech communities near Omorate, and other fascinating cultural destinations in the Lower Omo Valley. I also help travelers explore places such as Konso and Arba Minch, combining cultural experiences with the beautiful landscapes of southern Ethiopia. Every trip is planned around the traveler's schedule, interests, and expectations. My aim is to make each journey informative, comfortable, and meaningful, while encouraging respectful interactions with the communities we visit. More Than a Tour: Understanding Local Cultures I believe responsible cultural tourism should go beyond taking photographs. It should help visitors learn about local history, traditions, daily life, and the changes communities experience over time. As a local guide, I understand the importance of approaching communities respectfully, asking permission before taking photographs, and treating people as hosts rather than tourist attractions. My goal is to help visitors experience the Omo Valley with curiosity, respect, and a deeper appreciation of its cultural diversity. A Commitment That Continues Looking back at my original guiding certificate reminds me that every professional journey starts with a foundation. For me, that foundation was established in Jinka, and it has continued to grow through experience, dedication, and the many travelers I have had the privilege of guiding. Today, as the founder of Omo Valley Tour Ethiopia, I continue to share the region I call home with visitors from around the world. If you are planning a trip to Ethiopia and would like to discover the cultures and landscapes of the Omo Valley with a local guide, I would be happy to help you plan your journey.
